Wine Sales Statistics: U.S., California, and Global Market Data

Key wine sales, consumption, production, shipment, export, and sparkling wine statistics for the United States, California, and the global market.

Wine sales statistics show a market with several distinct stories. U.S. total wine consumption was 870 million gallons in 2024, while California wine shipments reached 232.3 million cases across all markets. Globally, wine consumption was 214.2 million hectoliters in 2024, the lowest level since 1961 according to the OIV’s reported series. The figures below separate consumption, production, shipments, exports, and sparkling wine so that each measure remains in context.

U.S. wine consumption

The Wine Institute’s US Wine Consumption figures put total U.S. wine consumption at 870 million gallons in 2024. The same 2024 measurement gives U.S. consumption of 2.54 gallons per resident and table wine consumption of 717 million gallons. These are consumption measures, not retail sales value or winery shipment figures, so they should not be treated as interchangeable with dollar-based market estimates.

The recent total-consumption series shows a sharp change from the high point recorded during the early 2020s. Total U.S. wine consumption was 1.04 billion gallons in 2020 and peaked at 1.06 billion gallons in 2021 in the table reported by the Wine Institute. It then measured 988 million gallons in 2022, 901 million gallons in 2023, and 870 million gallons in 2024.

YearU.S. total wine consumption
20201.04 billion gallons
20211.06 billion gallons
2022988 million gallons
2023901 million gallons
2024870 million gallons

The 2024 table-wine figure of 717 million gallons provides a useful category distinction within the total. Total wine includes more than table wine, while the per-resident figure presents the same market from a population-normalized perspective. Because the dataset reports these measures in different forms, the most useful comparison is directional: total consumption fell from the 2021 peak through 2024, while table wine still represented 717 million gallons in the latest reported year.

Long-term U.S. consumption trend

The Wine Institute’s historical consumption table places the 2024 total in a much longer sequence. U.S. total wine consumption was 267 million gallons in 1970 and 349 million gallons in 1974. It reached 565 million gallons in 2000, then 798 million gallons in 2010 and 873 million gallons in 2012. The reported figure was 923 million gallons in 2015, 947 million gallons in 2017, and 982 million gallons in 2018.

The next reported point was 971 million gallons in 2019, followed by 1.04 billion gallons in 2020, 1.06 billion gallons in 2021, 988 million gallons in 2022, 901 million gallons in 2023, and 870 million gallons in 2024. This sequence documents both long-run expansion and a more recent retreat from the 2021 peak. It does not by itself identify the causes of those changes.

Selected points from the same historical series make the scale easier to see:

  • 1970: 267 million gallons (Wine Institute, US Wine Consumption).
  • 1974: 349 million gallons (Wine Institute, US Wine Consumption).
  • 2000: 565 million gallons (Wine Institute, US Wine Consumption).
  • 2010: 798 million gallons (Wine Institute, US Wine Consumption).
  • 2012: 873 million gallons (Wine Institute, US Wine Consumption).
  • 2015: 923 million gallons (Wine Institute, US Wine Consumption).
  • 2017: 947 million gallons (Wine Institute, US Wine Consumption).
  • 2018: 982 million gallons (Wine Institute, US Wine Consumption).
  • 2019: 971 million gallons (Wine Institute, US Wine Consumption).

These observations are reported in gallons, whereas some international sources use hectoliters and industry shipment sources use cases. Unit differences matter when comparing markets. A larger number in one series does not automatically mean a larger market unless the unit, geography, and measurement concept are also aligned.

U.S. wine exports

The Wine Institute’s US Wine Exports series records 53.4 million gallons of U.S. wine exports in 2025 and 66.9 million gallons in 2024. The 2024 figure followed 57.6 million gallons in 2023, 77.3 million gallons in 2022, and 89.4 million gallons in 2021. The series therefore shows lower exports in 2024 than in each of the three preceding reported years.

Earlier observations were 99.1 million gallons in 2020, 97.3 million gallons in 2019, 98.3 million gallons in 2018, and 99.6 million gallons in 2017. U.S. wine exports were 108.1 million gallons in 2016 and 120.8 million gallons in 2015. For a longer historical reference, the table reports 73.0 million gallons in 2002.

YearU.S. wine exports
2015120.8 million gallons
201799.6 million gallons
201997.3 million gallons
202189.4 million gallons
202357.6 million gallons
202466.9 million gallons
202553.4 million gallons

Exports measure wine moving from the United States to external markets. They are not the same as total U.S. production, domestic consumption, or California shipments to the U.S. market. The 2025 export observation is the latest export year supplied here, while the consumption and California shipment figures cited elsewhere are for 2024; the measurement years should remain distinct.

Sparkling wine shipments

The Wine Institute’s Sparkling Wine Production & Imports series reports U.S. sparkling wine shipments in thousand 9-liter cases. Shipments totaled 33,911 thousand 9-liter cases in 2024. The corresponding figures were 35,334 thousand cases in 2023, 39,748 thousand in 2022, and 38,027 thousand in 2021.

The series also records 29,955 thousand 9-liter cases in 2020 and 31,027 thousand in 2019. Earlier reported volumes were 26,486 thousand cases in 2016, 21,341 thousand in 2014, and 15,376 thousand in 2010.

This measure is especially useful because it isolates sparkling wine and uses a standardized case unit. The 2024 total was below the 2022 observation in the supplied series, but above the 2010 and 2014 observations. Sparkling shipments should not be added to gallon-based consumption or export figures: the units and the market definitions differ.

California production and shipments

California is central to the U.S. wine supply picture in the Wine Institute’s California & US Wine Production data. California wine production was 508,246,015 gallons in 2024, while total U.S. wine production was 647,701,604 gallons. In 2023, California production was 612,459,615 gallons and U.S. production was 762,227,076 gallons. The reported 2020 figures were 635,993,915 gallons for California and 769,469,978 gallons for the United States. In 2018, California production was 720,849,884 gallons and U.S. production was 872,172,608 gallons.

Production is separate from shipments. The Wine Institute’s California Wine Shipments figures show that California wine shipments to all markets were 232.3 million cases in 2024. Shipments to the U.S. market were 203.5 million cases in that year, and the estimated retail value of California wine to the U.S. market was $67.5 billion.

For comparison, California wine shipments to all markets were 273.8 million cases in 2021, with an estimated retail value of California wine to the U.S. market of $53.5 billion. The same shipment series reports 209.0 million cases shipped to all markets in 2003. Shipment counts and estimated retail value describe distribution and market value, while production describes gallons made; they answer different questions about wine sales.

Global wine market

The OIV’s State of the World Vine and Wine Sector in 2024 reports global wine consumption of 214.2 million hectoliters in 2024. That level was down 3.3% versus 2023. The OIV also reports that 2024 consumption was the lowest since 1961, at 213.6 million hectoliters in the historical comparison stated in the source. These two OIV-reported figures describe the 2024 market and its historical comparison, and should not be merged into one value.

Global wine production was 226 million hectoliters in 2024, down 5% versus 2023. Global vineyard area was 7.1 million hectares in 2024 and declined 0.6% during the year. These are global production and land-area measures, not sales revenue or retail shipments.

International trade provides another distinct measure. Global wine exports held steady at 99.8 million hectoliters in 2024, according to the OIV. The export figure is stated in hectoliters, while the U.S. export series above is stated in gallons. The two should therefore be read as separate geographic series rather than directly combined.

Taken together, the OIV figures show a 2024 global market with 214.2 million hectoliters consumed, 226 million hectoliters produced, 7.1 million hectares of vineyard area, and 99.8 million hectoliters exported. The U.S. and California figures add market detail at a national and state level: U.S. consumption was 870 million gallons, California shipments reached 232.3 million cases across all markets, and California production was 508,246,015 gallons. Each statistic retains its original period, geography, unit, and measurement type.
